The Gomti River, also written as Gumti or Gomati River is a river flowing entirely within Uttar Pradesh and is one of the tributaries of Ganga River. The Gomti flows entirely through the Indo-Gangetic Plain. It is a perennial river. Perennial rivers are water bodies that flow continuously throughout the entire year, regardless of the season, and do not dry up.

Origin of Gomti River

The Gomti River originates from a rain-fed natural depression basin known as Gomat Taal or Fulhar Jheel, situated 50 km south of the Himalayas foothills in Madhotanda village of Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh.

Major Tributaries

Various Tributaries of River Gomti are Gachai, the Sai, the Jomkai, the Barna, the Chuha, the Saryu, the Giri, the Kalyani, and the Kathna. Sai River is one of the major tributaries which joins Gomti River near Jaunpur.

Districts

The Gomti River flows through 13 districts of Uttar Pradesh, including Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Sitapur, Lucknow, Barabanki, Sultanpur, Jaunpur, and Ghazipur. Lucknow city is the most prominent city located on banks of Gomti River. It covers about 12% of total area of the state. Gomti river basin is one of the important sub-basins of the Ganga basin and covers 3.53% of the Ganga basin.

Confluence

After flowing for about 940 kms, Gomti River joins Ganga River from left bank near Saidpur/Kaithi in Ghazipur district of Uttar Pradesh.

National Parks

There are no National Parks directly located on the banks of the Gomti River. It is so because Gomti flows entirely in densely populated Gangetic plains and National parks in Uttar Pradesh are mainly located in Terai and forest regions. The nearest major national park in Gomti basin region is Dudhwa National Park (indirectly related to basin) Located in Lakhimpur Kheri district.

Wildlife Sanctuaries and Bird Sanctuaries

These are mostly wetland-based bird sanctuaries supported by Gomti basin hydrology and groundwater.

  • Nawabganj Bird Sanctuary (Shaheed Chandra Shekhar Azad Bird Sanctuary): It is located in Unnao district, between Lucknow and Kanpur. It is wetland sanctuary and a Ramsar Site. It is important for migratory birds from Siberia, Europe, Central Asia. Species found, includes Siberian cranes, Painted stork, Sarus crane, Kingfishers, Ducks.
  • Samaspur Bird Sanctuary: Located in Rae Bareli district.
  • Sandi Bird Sanctuary: Located in Hardoi district.
